Electrical / Electronics Engineering

School of Engineering

Overview

The Department of Electrical / Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) of the School of Engineering, Thomas McGethrick Institute of Technology (TMIT), Ogoja, is established to provide competency-based technical education in electrical and electronic engineering in line with National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) standards.

The department trains students in the principles, design, installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical and electronic systems used in domestic, commercial, and industrial environments. Emphasis is placed on both theoretical understanding and extensive practical exposure through laboratories, workshops, and industrial training.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology covers a broad spectrum of applied engineering fields, including electrical power systems, electronics, telecommunications, instrumentation and control, renewable energy systems, automation, and signal processing. Graduates of the programme are equipped with the technical competence required to function effectively as technicians and technologists in power utilities, manufacturing industries, ICT firms, renewable energy companies, and related sectors.

The department offers the National Diploma (ND) in Electrical / Electronics Engineering Technology, designed to meet national manpower needs and industry requirements.

Objectives

The objectives of the Department of Electrical / Electronics Engineering Technology are to:

  • Produce technically competent and skilled graduates capable of installing, operating, maintaining, and servicing electrical and electronic systems.

  • Provide students with sound theoretical knowledge and practical skills in electrical power, electronics, telecommunications, and control systems.

  • Equip graduates with the ability to diagnose faults, carry out repairs, and perform preventive maintenance on electrical and electronic equipment.

  • Prepare students for industrial attachment (SIWES) and effective participation in the world of work.

  • Develop graduates with entrepreneurial skills for self-employment and small-scale business development.

  • Promote professionalism, safety consciousness, and ethical practices in engineering operations.

  • Lay a solid foundation for further studies at Higher National Diploma (HND) level or related professional certifications.

History

The Department of Electrical / Electronics Engineering Technology was established as one of the core departments of the School of Engineering at Thomas McGethrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, in response to the growing national demand for skilled electrical and electronics technicians.

From inception, the department was structured to align with the objectives of technical and vocational education in Nigeria, focusing on producing graduates with practical competence, adaptability, and employability. Over the years, the department has developed its curriculum, laboratory facilities, and instructional resources in accordance with NBTE Minimum Standards.

Continuous curriculum review, staff development, and improvement of workshop and laboratory facilities have positioned the department to respond to emerging trends such as renewable energy technology, automation, embedded systems, and modern telecommunications.

Accreditation

The National Diploma (ND) in Electrical / Electronics Engineering Technology offered by the department is structured in compliance with the NBTE Minimum Standards for polytechnic education in Nigeria.

The department is committed to meeting and sustaining accreditation requirements through:

  • Adequate and qualified academic and technical staff

  • Well-equipped laboratories and workshops

  • Approved curriculum and course content

  • Effective teaching, assessment, and evaluation methods

  • Mandatory Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)

  • Continuous improvement and quality assurance mechanisms

The Department operates under the academic supervision of Thomas McGethrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, and adheres strictly to NBTE guidelines to ensure the programme remains relevant, industry-driven, and nationally acceptable.
