Overview
The Department of Computer Science at Thomas McGettrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, is an academic and professional unit established to provide competency-based education and training in computing and information technology in accordance with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Minimum Standards.
The department focuses on equipping students with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities required to design, develop, manage, and maintain computer systems and software applications. Core areas of training include programming, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, database management systems, computer networks, software engineering, cybersecurity, web and mobile application development, and emerging computing technologies.
Emphasis is placed on hands-on laboratory work, project-based learning, and industrial training (SIWES) to ensure that graduates are industry-ready, adaptable, and capable of contributing to technological innovation and national development. The department prepares graduates for employment, self-reliance, and further academic and professional advancement in the computing profession.

History
The Department of Computer Science was established as part of the School of Engineering at Thomas McGettrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, in response to the increasing demand for skilled manpower in information and communication technology (ICT) and related sectors of the Nigerian economy.
From inception, the department was structured to align with national policies on technical and vocational education, with a strong emphasis on practical competence and employability. Over time, the department has expanded its academic offerings, laboratory facilities, and instructional resources to reflect advancements in computing technology while maintaining compliance with NBTE guidelines.
Through continuous curriculum review and staff development, the department remains committed to producing graduates who are technically competent, innovative, and ethically responsible.

The National Diploma (ND) in Computer Science programme offered by the department is structured in accordance with the NBTE Minimum Standards for Computer Science programmes in Nigerian polytechnics.
