Medical Laboratory Technology

Health Technology

Overview

The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) offers a National Diploma (ND) programme designed to train skilled laboratory technicians capable of performing diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive laboratory tests. The curriculum combines theoretical lectures, practical laboratory sessions, general studies (including communication, computer literacy, and entrepreneurship), supervised industrial attachment, and a final-year project.

The programme is competency-based and aligned with NBTE minimum standards and Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) requirements, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to support clinical decision-making, disease prevention, and healthcare delivery in hospitals, laboratories, and public health settings.

Graduates of the ND programme are prepared to work in clinical laboratories, diagnostic centers, research institutions, and public health facilities, contributing to accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and quality healthcare services.

Objectives

The ND and HND programmes in Medical Laboratory Technology aim to:

  1. Train graduates to perform laboratory analyses that support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

  2. Provide practical laboratory skills through structured teaching, workshops, and industrial attachments.

  3. Develop competence in data collection, reporting, and interpretation of laboratory results.

  4. Prepare graduates for employment in healthcare, diagnostic, research, and public health institutions.

  5. Encourage the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical practice in laboratory science.

  6. Equip students with the ability to undertake projects and research that advance laboratory practices and healthcare delivery.

History

The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology was established to meet the growing demand for qualified laboratory professionals in Nigeria’s healthcare system. The programme was designed in line with NBTE and MLSCN standards to produce competent technicians capable of supporting medical diagnosis, research, and public health initiatives.

The Department has quickly become a centre of excellence for practical and theoretical training in medical laboratory science, emphasizing hands-on experience and professional ethics in laboratory practice.

Accreditation

The Medical Laboratory Technology programme is fully compliant with NBTE minimum standards and meets the requirements of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

Key accreditation features include:

  • NBTE-approved curriculum with structured General Studies, Foundation Courses, Professional Courses, and Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

  • Competency-based training ensuring students acquire practical laboratory skills alongside theoretical knowledge.

  • Industrial training embedded within the programme, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in healthcare and diagnostic laboratories.

  • Final-year project that tests the students’ ability to apply laboratory theory to practical problems.

  • Compliance with NBTE and MLSCN regulations for credit units, grading, and graduation standards.

Graduates are awarded the National Diploma (ND) in Medical Laboratory Technology, with a grading system typically classified as:

  • Distinction: CGPA 3.50 and above

  • Upper Credit: CGPA 3.00 – 3.49

  • Lower Credit: CGPA 2.50 – 2.99

  • Pass: CGPA 2.00 – 2.49

Completion of the programme equips graduates with the knowledge, technical skills, and ethical grounding to excel as professional medical laboratory technicians in diverse healthcare environments.
