Overview

The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology (PMT) is committed to producing skilled pharmaceutical technicians capable of supporting the production, quality control, and dispensing of pharmaceutical and allied products. The National Diploma (ND) programme equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in pharmaceutical production, drug testing, quality assurance, and dispensing.

Graduates are trained to:

  • Assist in production processes in pharmaceutical and allied product manufacturing.

  • Maintain and install basic pharmaceutical equipment and wares.

  • Carry out identity and quality tests on drugs and pharmaceutical products.

  • Access and interpret pharmaceutical information using official reference materials.

  • Prepare simple extemporaneous medicaments in recognized pharmacies and hospitals.

  • Read, interpret, and dispense medical prescriptions when required.

The programme emphasizes hands-on laboratory experience, industrial exposure, and problem-solving skills, preparing students to contribute effectively to Nigeria’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

Objectives

The ND Pharmaceutical Technology programme aims to:

  1. Produce competent pharmaceutical technicians for the production and quality control of drugs and allied products.

  2. Develop students’ ability to maintain and operate basic pharmaceutical equipment safely and efficiently.

  3. Equip graduates to carry out identity and quality testing on pharmaceutical substances.

  4. Train students to interpret and dispense prescriptions under professional supervision.

  5. Promote knowledge acquisition and practical skills necessary for pharmaceutical research and production.

  6. Prepare graduates for employment, entrepreneurship, or further studies in pharmaceutical sciences and related fields.


History

The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology was established to address the growing need for qualified pharmaceutical technicians in Nigeria’s healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. The department was founded to train students in both the scientific and practical aspects of pharmaceutical production, quality control, and dispensing, aligning with NBTE standards and industry best practices.

Since its inception, the department has focused on producing graduates who are not only competent in technical operations but also ethical, safety-conscious, and adaptable to technological advancements in pharmaceutical sciences.

Accreditation

The ND Pharmaceutical Technology programme is fully aligned with NBTE minimum standards and is approved for the award of the National Diploma (ND).

Graduation requirements include:

  • Successful completion of all prescribed courses across four semesters.

  • Completion and defense of a final-year research/project work.

  • Achievement of a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0.

Upon completion, graduates are recognized as qualified pharmaceutical technicians, ready to contribute to pharmaceutical production, healthcare services, and research initiatives.
