Overview
The Department of Statistics at Thomas McGettrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, is established to provide competency-based education and training in statistics and data analysis in accordance with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Minimum Standards.
The department focuses on the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data for informed decision-making across various sectors of the economy. Training emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical applications of statistics using modern statistical tools and software.
Core areas of instruction include descriptive and inferential statistics, probability theory, statistical computing, data analysis, survey design, quality control, operations research, and applied mathematics. Students are also trained in the use of statistical software packages such as Excel, SPSS, R, and Python to solve real-life problems.
The programme prepares graduates for employment in government agencies, research institutions, manufacturing industries, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, education, and private sector organizations, as well as for self-employment and further studies.

History
The Department of Statistics was established as part of the School of Engineering at Thomas McGettrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, in response to the growing national demand for skilled manpower in data analysis, research, and evidence-based decision-making.
The department was created to support national development by producing graduates capable of applying statistical methods to industrial processes, social and economic planning, scientific research, and quality assurance. Since its establishment, the department has focused on developing a curriculum that balances statistical theory with practical data analysis skills, in line with NBTE requirements.
Continuous curriculum review, staff development, and improvement of computing and analytical facilities ensure that the department remains relevant in the era of data-driven decision-making and digital transformation.
Accreditation
The National Diploma (ND) in Statistics programme is structured in accordance with the NBTE Minimum Standards for Statistics programmes in Nigerian polytechnics.
