Overview

The School of Engineering and Technology (SET) of Thomas McGethrick Institute of Technology (TMIT), Ogoja is established to provide competency-based technical and technological education in line with the objectives of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

The School is structured to train middle- and high-level technical manpower with adequate theoretical knowledge and strong practical skills required for employment, self-reliance, and national development. Emphasis is placed on hands-on laboratory work, workshop practice, industrial training (SIWES), and problem-solving skills, ensuring that graduates are able to function effectively in industrial, commercial, and service sectors.

The School of Engineering and Technology comprises the following NBTE-recognized academic departments:

  • Electrical / Electronic Engineering Technology

  • Computer Engineering Technology

  • Computer Science

  • Statistics

  • Music Technology

Each programme is designed to meet industry requirements and national manpower needs through a well-structured curriculum, qualified personnel, and appropriate facilities.

The mission of the School of Engineering and Technology is to:

  • Produce skilled and competent engineering and technology graduates capable of meeting industry requirements.

  • Emphasize practical training, laboratory work, and workshop practice alongside theoretical instruction.

  • Promote industrial attachment (SIWES) as a core component of skill acquisition.

History

The School of Engineering and Technology was established as a foundational academic unit of Thomas McGethrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, in response to the national need for skilled technical manpower in engineering, computing, data analysis, and applied technologies.

The school was created to support the Federal Government’s policy on technical and vocational education, with a mandate to produce graduates who possess both theoretical understanding and practical competence. Since its establishment, the school has progressively developed its academic programmes, laboratories, workshops, and instructional resources to align with NBTE minimum standards.

Through continuous curriculum development and staff capacity building, the School has remained focused on delivering relevant, industry-oriented training that supports economic and technological development.

Accreditation

All programmes in the School of Engineering and Technology are structured in compliance with NBTE Minimum Standards for polytechnic education. The School is committed to maintaining the requirements for programme accreditation, including:

  • Qualified academic and technical staff

  • Adequate laboratories, workshops, and instructional facilities

  • Standardized curriculum and course content

  • Effective assessment, examination, and continuous evaluation systems

The School operates under the academic supervision of Thomas McGethrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja, and is dedicated to continuous improvement to meet and sustain NBTE accreditation status for all its programmes.
