7. Historical Background (Our Story)

Thomas McGettrick Institute of Technology, Ogoja is named after Bishop Thomas McGettrick, an Irish priest and the pioneer Bishop of the Ogoja Diocese. The Institute is a centenary project of the Catholic Diocese of Ogoja, marking one hundred years of the reception of the Catholic faith in Ogoja in 1921.
The site presently occupied by the Institute was originally home to St. Thomas College, which served as a foundation institution for post-elementary education. In the early 1970s, the college was transformed into a Teachers Training College (TTC), dedicated to training teachers and awarding the Grade II Teaching Certificate.
Throughout its various transformations, the institution remained under the custody of the Catholic Church. However, during the era of government takeover of missionary schools, the institution experienced significant disruption, resulting in the suspension of academic activities for over a decade.
Following the return of the institution to the Catholic Mission, Most Rev. Dr. John Ayah, then Bishop of Ogoja Diocese, initiated plans to convert the institution into a College of Education. Renovation works began but were slowed by his transfer to the Diocese of Uyo.
As part of the Diocese’s centenary celebration, the vision was expanded, and the plan was upgraded from a College of Education to a Polytechnic-style institution.
Finally, on May 25, 2021, Thomas McGettrick Institute of Technology was formally founded by the Bishop of Ogoja Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Donatus Akpan. The Institute was established with the aim of producing skilled middle-level manpower and entrepreneurs who will excel outstandingly in the areas of technology and management, while upholding moral integrity, dignity of labour, and service to humanity.
